melindamiller posted from a guest

@melinda ICN is for schools only.

Gary Stager's recently completed DEN webinar on PBL. Worth the time to view. - http://stager.tv/blog/?p=791
melindamiller posted from a guest
@Karl Oh, I see
WOScholar posted from a guest
ICN sounds like Texas's TETN. I have been saying for a few years that the system is outdated. They have done nothing to keep up with changes, and school districts have to pay to access any of its content even though it is state funded. Sad waste of resources for such a limited number of users.
WOScholar posted from a guest
In Texas, the education agency uses TETN to share policy changes as well as grant information, etc. So, the districts that do not pay to access it do not get those updates or policy changes except in short paragraph handouts via email.

I think we're doing ok but by the time this session is over, I might not be so sure.

The problem with getting the word out to inspire is you don't hear back one way or the other
Vic Jaras posted from the web
IT is hard to get a good score when you are in a technology restrictive environment :)
Dom Giegerich posted from a guest
Many just want you to tell them what the vision is and they agreed. They were easily impressed.
Deron Durflinger posted from a guest
@ vic the DE restricts technology use?:)
Vic Jaras posted from the web
I was thinking of school districts- Let me illustrate how much access I have to the technology tools I need to help move Iowa forward with technology :(

We are interested in learning more about google sketch up and Adobe Connect Pro. Can you help us?
Scott McLeod posted from the web
@Deron: the short answer to your question to Vic is YES
Dave Keane posted from the web
I see a need for a best practices clearing house established by the state or at least an AEA
Scott McLeod posted from the web
@Deron: ISU and U. Iowa Ed Admin programs are both using Adobe Connect Pro in their principalship / superintendent programs
Deron Durflinger posted from a guest
We need some help getting it going for our classes we are establishing across districts and states
Vic Jaras posted from the web
We have made some progress - like using Adobe Connect for the first state-wide webinars :O
Vic Jaras posted from the web
Google Sketch up is Free and we have free upgrade licenses for ALL Iowa K-12 districts. Plus all the AEAs are using Connect Pro plus some higher Ed like UNI. I am happy to share information on these two
Deron Durflinger posted from a guest
Isn't it available through the DE for a reduced cost to districts
Deron Durflinger posted from a guest
@ vic Connect pro is what we are interested in. All machines have google sketch up, but we could use the upgrade for the VR system. It seems easier than blender
Vic Jaras posted from the web
Yes- Sketch Up is FREE. Adobe Connect Pro is about $150 per year per license via the Iowa Educators Consortium contact Jerry Cochrane for pricing. Meanwhile visit www.acrobat.com where you can sign up free and use the free version of connect that allows 3 people to connect- the pro version allows 100.
Deron Durflinger posted from a guest
Sounds good we need the 100 version. We are working with a school in New Jersey to collaborate through a sociology class
Vic Jaras posted from the web
Deron- I gave license codes to all the AEAs for distribution since they have to report the number of installs to me and I give Google the Iowa total number of users per our agreement. Who is your AEA?
Karl posted from a guest
@Vic are the licsense per seat or per district
Vic Jaras posted from the web
The connect license is per user- a Teacher with 1 license can support up to 100 kids per session. There is no limit on the number of total seats per day, and with virtual hosting you have unlimited space for uploading.
Karl posted from a guest
@deron. Your Tech should have the number, they were given out at the 1:1 meeting we had at ISU. The codes were for local installs since you are a 1:1 like us.
Vic Jaras posted from the web
email me at vic@iowa.gov and I will send you a web page tutorial that allows you to view web based movies on all the features of Adobe Connect Pro
Vic Jaras posted from the web
opps it is vic.jaras@iowa.gov

Safety/security always seems to be the tough sticking point. Have to remember that in K-12, we have parents with their own expectations about safety, and their own view of quality education. We have to be responsive to their concerns, but we also have to do what's right educationally. Sometimes these are in conflict. How do we assure that our parents are on the same page, fully included in the discussions?
Karl posted from a guest
@Tim good point. Once you start telling parents there will be a laptop comming home, some really freak out about accessing the internet from home.
Tim Limbert - limbert65 posted from a guest
@Karl - I walked into a conversation between a group of parents who were "freaking out" (their words) about our decision to extend the 1:1 down into middle school. They don't think it's educationally valid, they don't think it's safe, and they don't think their kids are responsible enough to handle it. Drove home to me how we've just assumed, to some extent, that the value of 1:1 was obvious to everyone, and would be automatically welcomed. Also made me realize we haven't done enough to include parents equally.
Tim Limbert - limbert65 posted from a guest
Clarification: the above post refers to one small group of parents that I encountered. Not saying they all feel that way.
Lyle Schwartz posted from a guest
Talk to Sara Keehn at United to get a perspective on 1:1 at the elementary level.
Tim Limbert - limbert65 posted from a guest
@Lyle: Definitely will do that. Thanks.
Mike Sansone posted from a guest
@Angela - I disagree w/ last point in that RWW piece...individuals (and groups of) will drive things, not the enterprise...but a great piece
Mike Sansone posted from a guest
biggest shift in social media in 2009 (my eyes) -- the edu-community/collective has become as influential a voice in SocMed as marketing or PR. Don't forget, it will always be new to someone - don't let your proficiency become your deficiency (HT to @AngelaMaiers on that mantra)
