thanks for the notes! sorry i wasn't able to keep up with this backchannel too ... hope it was interesting to you. I'll get you invited to the CFP basecamp as we're setting it up ...
I was definitely intrigued by the CFP call---I followed your work moderately this past summer, but am certainly interested in plugging in much more (especially to the benefit of Qworky). I'm particularly interested in the international component, as the manner in which activists in countries such as Egypt and Iran have distributed video through social media concretely exhibits the "medium is the movement" thesis, and in my mind, portends to the future of media distribution in general.
great suggestion. we tried to have a session on Egypt last year, and Freedom House paid for a couple people to fly from Egypt (a blogger and video person if I recall correctly) but it fell through because of visa issues. they also did a session on Iran two years ago but i'm not sure there were any iranians. please submit a proposal, and i'll put you in touch with Robert Guerra of FreedomHouse
one of the things i think is so interesting about CFP is how the email discussions broke down on insider/outsider boundaries. everybody who spoke about the importance of email is a long-time CFP attendee. some of it's age, but wait a second, Deborah and I are as old as most of them. fascinating
Sounds good. The #FBDiversity discussion is fascinating----I poised whether there was a connection between the study and danah boyd's PDF speech on "white flight" from Myspace to Facebook, and she tweeted that she thinks it's exactly why.
how cool is that? and Kety E wound up RTing!
it'd be great if you could do a short post on this. shireen may be working on something too.
Yes, I was planning on doing that tonight or tomorrow depending on my availability.
Will be tying it to danah's speech, spent a while yesterday analyzing it in relation to the FB study
btw did you see that i got semi-flamed by kathy sierra? http://www.talesfromthe.net/jon/?p=957#comment-42625 ... we patched it up in email
or more accurately on Twitter DMs
I did not, checking it now
i'm working on a follow-up post on that
Well, despite any disagreements, these are clearly very important conversations to have. If being semi-flamed ignites discussions that progress the needed improvements, then it's all for the better.
It seems like you handled it as well as you could. Obviously this is a very touchy issue right now for women in the tech fields...
yeah
there's a definite sense in her post there and on Tara's thread that "i had to work hard ,and so should others". which i don't actually disagree with. if people have worked hard in other ways, i don't see any problem seeking them out. Willow from JTI and Mohammed from the Dream Activists for example
i'm sorry, i mean i don't actually *agree* with that
People should be recognized for their hard work, but it doesn't mean it should be as hard for others just because of past inequities.
also as a friend said to me, she may be underestimating the importance of women-in-technology role models for teenagers whose moms aren't Kathy Sierra
the face of technology is completely changing. People need to be made aware that this is happening, which is why these tech conferences should become much more inviting for women in any way possible especially.
I'm sorry though, but I have to run off for a few meetings. Will keep you in the loop on the #FBDiversity post, work on a CFP proposal, and let me know if I can help with the kathy sierra situation at all.
Spent a long time working on the #FBdiversity post---doozy of an issue! Taking longer than expected, but I hope it will exhibit Qworky's expertise and capacity to lead on developing diversity-promoting communication mechanisms.
yeah a doozy of an issue indeed. you will probably want to post a draft somewhere and ask shireen, cheri mullins, and maybe a couple of others for feedback.
I read through Cheri's post closely, and it's partially why I wanted to take more time to make sure I get this post right and do this issue justice. Cheri is much more positive about FB's study, and I want to make sure to incorporate that perspective while also highlighting the contrast to danah boyd's PDF speech (Shireen said that her white flight theory has "everything to do" with the FB study), which I will be tying to Tracy's view that the study on the whole seems self-fulfiling prophecy ish.
Draft post published: http://bit.ly/8zzQVl
Tweeted Shireen and Cheri for feedback from @HarryWaisbren (wasn't sure if we should promote from @qworky before it's finished), could tweet out to Tracy and other participants in #FBdiveristy but don't want to tip balance btw soliciting feedback vs requesting comments...
looking at it now. quick reaction: good but long. agreed, post the draft on your personal blog. sure tweet to tracy and others ... more eyes are better.
Thanks for the feedback! I responded in comments: http://bit.ly/5UR0cb
i replied with some more specific suggestions. try doing another draft and sharing it with mikal and annie (also circling back to shireen and tracy). shireen and tracy both get asked for feedback all the time so don't be surprised if they don't have a chance to help.
flying down to sf, talk to you soon!
Draft post take 2 up and available here: http://bit.ly/7Rs7J6
Sorry for the delay, I've gotten stuck between Quinlan work amidst the holiday/family obligations. Hoping this post can reignite some of the energy behind this issue despite it though!
Your comments were very helpful (and, of course, much appreicate)---word count is down to 597, and I tried to focus the points on motivations/implications much more
much better! some comments in the thread
Thanks for the comments jon, very helpful as usual. Shireen said via tweet that she will be providing feedback as well, and afterwards I'll post my final draft
Still no word from Shireen despite various tweets referring to her upcoming feedback. The last thing I want to do is hassle her (am unsure if I want to solicit feedback again even on a final draft with that in mind), but I'll be completing this final draft today and begin plans for next steps shortly afterward.
Final draft is (finally) finished, although minor changes can (and presumably will) still be made: http://madprogress.blogspot.com/2009/12/final-draft-facebook-diversity-debate.html
Your comments so far have been absolutely integral for clarifying my writing and my arguments, so please make sure to relay any other input you have! I'm excited to plan and enact its distribution, and hope it represents the Qworky brand to the fullest :)
Have not heard back from Mikal/Annie about rollout to the article, and am planning to do it this afternoon or tomorrow. Alas, once again am editting to further clean it up and hone arguments (final this time, for real), and unless otherwise advised will publish and promote on that schedule.
Am incorporating this link to an article on danah boyd's forthcoming new paper on this topic, which I first found last night and am excitedly beginning to assess: http://www.readwriteweb.com/readwritestart/2009/12/race-shapes-teen-facebook-adoption.php
I'm looking at this post as a beginning thing, and although I am quite proud of what I have done (despite the continually delayed time frame amidst the holidays), I'm focused on using it as a building block to further improve Qworky relationships and our brand name.
Alas, my pride in this project is but a function of your essential input throughout, so make sure to let me know your thoughts whenever you feel it is warranted!
Wow, just found that boyd directly responded to the Facebook data team here: http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2009/12/29/race_and_social.html
Well, so happy to hear that she is engaging in this issue so vociferously. However....may have to rework my piece to include and address this, especially sicne it perhaps can act as a line of dialogue on the matter, as she specifically discusses how she "was disappointed that so many academics immediately began critiquing Facebook rather than appreciating the glimpse that we get into the data they get to see"...
this piece goes over hte origin of those responses, but given the use of boyd herself in its justification, and the importance of relationships with her, I want to handle this quite carefully undoubtedly.
hmm, well, interesting post by danah. yup, looks like revisions are a good idea. it's interesting that she sees the FB data as consistent with what she's observed.
I've been making revisions throughout the day to further align it with danah's perspective: http://madprogress.blogspot.com/2009/12/final-draft-facebook-diversity-debate.html
I edited to encompass a more constructive tone ala danah, and also designing it as more of a lead in to her forthcoming article. Am working on the conclusion towards those ends especially.
w00t!! Finally (this time for real for real) have this post finished and published on the qworky blog: http://www.qworky.net/2010/01/the-ongoing-facebook-diversity-debate/
